Lots of book fetishisation discourse again, which makes it easy to dismiss the far right as ‘uneducated book burners’. This is dangerous. Reminder that, you know, Mein Kampf was a book. There’s always been an elitist dimension to racism; intellectuals aren’t immune. 1/2

Just looking back at our Newham Monitoring Project Annual Report from 1983 & the echo of the past and the present with the same fear within in our communities. The lesson of 70/80’s was that defeating the fascists doesn’t defeat racism. Defeating racism defeats fascism. ✊🏾✊🏿

Can we put the question "Is he really a fascist or is he just stupid?" to bed now, please? He endorses Britain First, and he imagines that housing remand prisoners 8000 miles away for reasons of convenience is a thing that could happen. This is not an "or" situation.

Newsflash: white people who do racist violence and shout racist slogans are racist. Yes, even if they feel hard done by. Even if they ARE hard done by! There is no amount of deprivation that makes racism not racism.

It would be necessary for every single private company on earth to go bust too if they were never allowed to raise their prices to keep up with inflation

It's a pretty sweet motto, thought unfortunate that the main thing Beatrice and Sidney Webb wanted to know the cause of was genetically unfit people having too many children.

Stoke-on-Trent should be designated as a world heritage site, according to an architectural historian. bbc.com/news/articles/…

With Oasis reuniting to tour, my research into Britpop nostalgia (a phenomenon that is about as old as Britpop itself) seems once again pretty relevant, so I’ve unlocked the two posts I’ve published on the subject for my newsletter. 🧵

A long shot, but is there any writing on doing social science reseach around groups that the researcher finds in some way silly, even contemptible? Not so much research on on obviously awful political groups, more on e.g. epistemic communities that are often thought stupid?
