The Great Carbon Rip-off The UK's planned alignment with EU-ETS is a grave economic mistake that will hit every household and business. Higher carbon prices will drive up electricity costs, fuel inflation, and by 2027, increase heating and transport costs. 🧵

The new energy price cap is out. Down 7%. In terms of the electricity bill, the (gas-driven) wholesale price is only £17 above where it was ten years ago. The increase is almost all about Net Zero.

I've just discovered that Ofgem has reworked how they deal with Smart Meter costs, so my spreadsheet miscategorised these policy costs. The revised analysis of the electricity price increase is as follows:

And herein lies the problem. Expensive energy subsidies lead to uncompetitive energy costs, which lead to yet more trade-distorting subsidies in energy intensive industries. Sadly for Europe the obvious solution (reducing costly renewable energy subsidies) isn't even considered.

The Labour Party No developer ever "promised" homes, only you did and now that you see it's not going to happen, you resort to threats. If you knew anything about business, planning, EIA and construction, you would know it takes more than a stroke of a Communist's pen to make such things happen.

In Q2 so far, the average cost of gas on UK markets was 2.86 pence per kWh. The Ofgem energy price cap for electricity for Q2 2025 was 27.03 pence per kWh. That's 9.43 times more. But Ed Miliband and green energy tycoons will tell you that high prices are caused by gas.

My recent appearance on British Thought Leaders is apparently their second most viewed video on YouTube If we can get to #1 there's cake in it for me, so this is a totally shameless plug 😁 I talk about the challenges we face in our energy sector and why our existing policy direction

The data is in for CfD subsidies in April 2025. Overall subsidies are down from April last year, but subsidies per MWH are up. What is going on? A thread 🧵(1/n)

Wholesale electricity prices back down to where they were in late 2018. Why is the latest electricity price cap 66% higher than Oct18-Mar19 price cap? #CostOfNetZero

The Thames is one of the cleanest urban rivers in the world. It's better now than it's ever been, and will soon get even better. Which Khan knows, which is why he's tweeting this, so he can claim credit for something that's nothing to do with him.

In April, CfD funded solar farms were subsidised to the tune of £9/MWh, making them more expensive than gas, before even considering the ~£32/MWh grid balancing and backup costs that should be attributed to intermittent renewables. ROC & FiT funded solar even more expensive.

Highest subsidies on record for the month of May. £212.6m to pay for all these "cheap" renewables. Next highest was May 2020, during the Covid crisis when subsidies reached £169.3m. If we're paying subsidies, renewables are more expensive than gas.

💰The Cost of Renewables 2025 Megathread💰 The Government is pushing the narrative that renewables are cheap and gas is the problem. It's been 18 months since my last thread showed this to be a lie. Have things changed? Or is Ed Miliband driving us towards ruin? 🧵

According to documents I have obtained from the Met Office shows that a staggering 80% of UK temperature stations are classified as 'poor or unreliable' by international standards (WMO Class 3–5). These classifications are used globally by the UN to assess climate data

The UK government has quietly admitted that renewables and other low-carbon technologies essential to the rapid drive to net zero are more expensive than using fossil fuel, City AM can reveal, which has in turn made energy bills higher for Brits up and down the country. Labour

A total of over £7.5bn has been paid out since November 2022 to subsidise non-domestic customers to use all those subsidised "cheap" renewables. £5.8bn on electricity & £1.7bn on gas. Subsidising generation & then subsidising consumption. Madness. Link in reply below.

In the Telegraph, Matt Oliver and @jonathan__leake seem to have been led astray by all the green blobbers they have interviewed for their essay. It is simply untrue to claim, as they do, that "At the moment, the biggest single factor affecting electricity prices is gas" (THREAD)

UK electricity spot prices down to the level of late 2018. Why are our bills so high and forecast to go even higher? Renewables and Net Zero.
