Excellent! We tested a biologging tag developed within Intertagua project in the IPOCAMP hyperbaric facility run by IMAR and @OkeanosUac. The tag passed all tests with flying (well, diving) colours. Watch the video and visit intertagua.eu to know more. Azores Whale Lab - Cetacean Ecology Group

Congratulations Elizabeth Atchoi!! @OkeanosUac

Ever wondered how it feels to stare down at a sperm whale’s blowhole? While collecting blow samples, sometimes we get to see whales from an unusual perspective. Here a whale carrying an acoustic d-tag in collaborative work with @alecburslem and 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 SMRU (now posting at Bluesky)

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new paper led by Catarina T. Fonseca in Frontiers - Marine Science : 'Dive Behavior and Activity Patterns of Fin Whales in a Migratory Habitat' doi.org/10.3389/fmars.…

First images recorded inside the Azores EEZ part of the NOAA Ocean Exploration Voyage to the Ridge. The ridge explored today unveiled a very diverse #deepsea ecosystem with a large variety of gorgonians, bamboo corals, black corals and stony corals, as well as colourful glass sponges.

Congratulations to Rui Prieto Rui Prieto from the Azores Whale Lab - Cetacean Ecology Group on this new chapter on the Sei Whale in the Handbook of the Mammals of Europe. @OkeanosUac

🥳New paper alert! “Dive behaviour and activity patterns of fin whales in a migratory habitat” led by Catarina T. Fonseca from Azores Whale Lab - Cetacean Ecology Group with contributions from myself, Rui Prieto , Cláudia Oliveira, Marta TM, Annette Scheffer and Mónica A.Silva. frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

Arctic whales in warming waters 🌡️: Our new paper is out in Science Advances: "Future seasonal changes in habitat for Arctic whales during predicted ocean warming" science.org/doi/full/10.11… @mads_heide and others!

If you are interested to know more about “Energy-mediated responses of sperm whales to environmental shifts using bioenergetic models” Mariana Silva from Azores Whale Lab - Cetacean Ecology Group will be presenting her results at the #SMM2022 this afternoon (3pm) Marine Mammalogy

Proud to announce the publication of a new open access paper on the historical occurrence of #whales (and #whaling) in Scotland. Many years in the making with Susannah Calderan, @denrisch, Russell Leaper and Cherry Allison International Whaling Commission. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/aq…

Risso's x Bottlenose dolphin hybrids appear to be reproductively viable in the wild. A source of new biodiversity or a problem for a small isolated (bottlenose) population? Fascinating stuff by Nienke van Geel @gordon_hastie Ben Wilson Scottish Association for Marine Science onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/aq…

Great paper by a bunch of fantastic colleagues including Dr. Regina Guazzo Ian Durbach, and "twitterless" Steve, Tyler and Liz illustrating one of ACCURATE worst nightmares: Density dependent cue rates (in minke whales) frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

New paper alert! Humpback whale song revolutions continue to spread from the central into the eastern South Pacific. Josephine Schulze, Judith Denkinger, Javier Oña, M. Sperm whales get restless around whale watching boats, shows new study led by Cláudia Oliveira: 'Exposure to whale watching vessels affects dive ascents and resting behavior in sperm whales' frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

The Azores Whale Lab - Cetacean Ecology Group is happy to announce a recent paper on the evolution of fin whale songs in the North Atlantic published in eLife - the journal Miriam Romagosa: Romagosa et al., 2024: doi.org/10.7554/eLife.…). @OkeanosUac
