Two of the amazing C16th bench ends at Altarnun, #Cornwall for #WoodensDay and #WoodCarvingsOnWednesday - in the first, Robert Daye says he is the carver, with John Hodge the clerk, William Buckingham the curate, responsible for commissioning them, & a jester adds a light touch!

My latest blog post. Just a short read exploring 'tender cheese' in its historical context. modernmedievalcuisine.com/2025/05/14/shi…

Monk's Modern Medieval Cuisine Have a look at Hebden Cow at The Courtyard Dairy for a young cheese, it’s based on York Soft and I think might be the closest to what you’re looking for. A great read thank you!

The medieval bishops of Lichfield held rights to the fishing in the town's ponds. Though the bishops rented out the pools, they maintained the right to take eels for their personal use. In 1501 the Bishop even hired a local fisherman to send him eels when he was in London!

So yesterday we feasted & partied like (29th July ) 1533. A wonderful & most memorable day! I successfully recreated 34 #authentic #Tudor dishes from an original surviving menu & an additional 8 authentic vegetarian alternatives. Today this Tudor housewife is a proud lady indeed!

Who liked eel metaphors? Charles Dickens, that's who! Uriah Heep, the antagonist from David Copperfield, is often described as writhing, & at one point gets told off for it: "If you’re an eel, Sir, conduct yourself like one. If you’re a man, control your limbs, Sir! Good God!"

Lucky me! Coffee and pastries two days in a row. ☕️🧇 Stumbled on a café that makes the authentic version of the Belgian waffle, traditionally known as the Liège Waffle. Yeasted, brioche dough pressed into a waffle iron with chunks of pearl sugar. Perfection. 👌

I present to you the simple delights of a tea garden at the Yorkshire Stingo Tavern as seen in the late eighteenth century. A rural inn on the Marylebone Road. Do attend before the late 1960s as it will be demolished to make way for a motorway bypass near Paddington Station.

Sometimes people ask me how medieval people could possibly catch so many eels. Welll...it's because there were So. Many. Eels. How many? Currently, every year, c. 1 billion elvers (baby eels) come ashore in Europe. And this is more than a 90% decline from historic levels. 1/2
