Glen Finglas @WoodlandTrust was the next stop on my final #PhD #fieldwork campaign Stirling Natural Sciences measuring our Dwarf #Birch (Betula nana) planting trial sites. I've gathered some really cool data from here - looking forward to sharing the results in due course! @WTScotsocial

Major #PhD milestone Stirling Natural Sciences: data collection is now complete! My final ever #fieldwork day took place where it all began on #NTSBenLawers. Studying Dwarf #Birch (Betula nana) in our planting trial covering 3 sites, 7 field seasons, 750 trees, & 38,414 measurements! 💪🥳

Really chuffed with the newspapers running our Stirling Natural Sciences story on my newly published montane willow scrub review paper! I was also talking live on BBC Radio Scotland on Tuesday, & great coverage of the pioneering restoration work by National Trust for Scotland too! The Herald The Scotsman

The tree pictured here is a very rare sight on our hills... it is a remnant dark leaved willow (possily the only remnant), that has clung on high up on the steep crags of Talla in the Wild Heart...

Overgrazing by deer and sheep had rendered several mountain trees and shrubs as near extinct. But a new study shows they are making a remarkable recovery. 🔗 forestryjournal.co.uk/news/24690684.…

Great to be out doing #fieldwork today at #Corrour, #monitoring our #montane Scots #Pine planting & mycorrhizal inoculation trial WITHOUT the use of fencing. Rather chuffed with how well these trees have fared in the year since planting up here above #LochOssian at 500m altitude!

These photos are of the same Downy willow, with one taken in September 2021, and one in December this year. Snow cover is important for montane willows as it provides protection for the plant through the long winter months, and also a flush of nutrients in the spring.
