The tree pictured here is a very rare sight on our hills... it is a remnant dark leaved willow (possily the only remnant), that has clung on high up on the steep crags of Talla in the Wild Heart...

These photos are of the same Downy willow, with one taken in September 2021, and one in December this year. Snow cover is important for montane willows as it provides protection for the plant through the long winter months, and also a flush of nutrients in the spring.
