"empathy seems to have very little to do with one's interest in the macabre... dark traits don't necessitate low empathy... morbid curiosity itself seems to have little to do with empathy or compassion" amazon.com/Morbidly-Curio…

Just posted a spicy one. "In Praise of Punching Down"-- where I argue that academic criticism shouldn't depend on power dynamics. Science needs universal standards, not intellectual bubble wrap. Being taken seriously means having your work scrutinized, regardless of status.

My advice to anyone who is searching for meaning: don't overthink it. Dwelling on existential questions and concerns won't satisfy your need for meaning. Direct your attention outward to find things you can do right now to make a positive difference in the world. And do them.

"Morbid curiosity is a straightforward concept: When the costs of learning about a threat are low, it's advantageous to pay attention and gather information. In these times we feel curious—morbidly curious." a.co/d/9YpZDm9

"We've all heard that bad news travels faster than good news...it's really threatening news that travels the fastest...our negativity bias is driven by threat-related information specifically, rather than negative information more generally." a.co/d/dKnvoiO

"One example of overactive predator detection is the visual looming bias...approaching objects are estimated to be traveling faster than receding objects moving at the same speed...an important advantage when it comes to detecting predators." a.co/d/gUegMpx

1. The Santa Barbara school of evolutionary psychology holds that a universal set of complex psychological adaptations evolved in Pleistocene Africa. In no particular order, here are few folks on here doing research in this tradition, highlighting one paper/thread each:🧵

Honored that SHAMANISM has been named one of the best books of the month by TIME! "Blending memoir, investigative journalism, and anthropological fieldwork, Shamanism is a deep dive into a religious tradition that is as mysterious as it is timeless." ~3 weeks until it's out!
