Really grateful that my friend Meg Raby wrote this in response to RFK Jr.'s nonsense about autistic people.

We’re RIGHT HERE in front of your eyes, RFK. You just choose to not see us as humans and to ignore our existence. ACTUAL common sense: research the rise in adult diagnoses, compare that with the ratio of increase in youth. Simple. MANY autistic adults diagnosed in recent years.

This is alarming on many levels...

Being a late discovered neurodivergent person is a pretty big mind f. You live your entire life with challenges you don't realize you have and when people talk about those challenges it never even crosses your mind that they apply to you...

Autism is living in a constant state of cPTSD due to literal years of daily micro traumas that even the most self aware autistic person can't strategize around. And THAT, dear people on the internet, is what makes it a disability.

Late discovered autism is being told you're the problem so incessantly and for literal decades that when someone who actually understands it comes around and tells you that you are NOT the problem and never were... you have a REALLY hard time believing them.

Autistic Burnout isn’t just “too much work.” It’s masking. Pain. Shame. Trying to care for everyone while no one cares for you. It’s rejection sensitivity, executive dysfunction, chronic illness, trauma. And still being told you’re “high functioning.” No wonder we break.

When someone tells you they have a hidden disability and your 1st thought is that they don't look like they have that disability... the correct response is not to question if they have the disability but rather to question your understanding of it. Hope that helps 🙃
