Since when did cognitive load become about making everything easy? Oversimplification and overscaffolding is robbing children of the chance to think.

New role, new questions! Just joined the team at Carousel Learning, & I’m diving into all things retrieval practice. Primary teachers - what’s your go-to strategy for retrieval in your classroom? Any resources, routines or tips you swear by? I’d love to hear what works for you.

The critique that these are 'nothing new' is precisely why they are held in such regard/why they matter. They have stood the test of time - decades, in fact. The most effective teachers *consistently* enact these principles.

There are, by now, a few good curricular resources that you can buy for what is ultimately a pittance, given how long you can use them for and how much time you can save your staff. PKC is an excellent primary example, and perf if you're still asking staff to plan from scratch

Obviosly, oracy is important. What is more important, however, is ensuring pupils actually have the knowledge to speak about. A focus on improving how to speak without focusing on what to speak about will always fall short. schoolsweek.co.uk/voice-21-at-10…

Really excited to share that I’ve written a book with the awesome Sallie Stanton for primary English subject leaders.

I had this twice on interviews. The first time, children asked me Qs like which biscuit would I be, if I could be any biscuit. The second time, children asked how I would contribute to their school and make it better.

And with this comes a change in self-concept. 'I know more' - 'I am someone who can learn'. There is a shift in identity. Therein lies the true power of knowledge-rich curricula.

PRIMARY HTs/DHTs/Y6 TEACHERS Download the marked Y6 SATs test scripts from the government website. These are very useful for briefly demonstrating to future pupils how the tests work, how to structure answers etc.
