Romani culture has long been misrepresented and misunderstood. If you’re around in Edinburgh tomorrow and want to take a dive into Romani history, and what it’s like to be Romani in Europe today, come along tomorrow to Toppings to my book event: toppingbooks.co.uk/events/edinbur…

I’ll never say we should stop adapting Austen—there’s always room for new interpretations. But if an adaptation is worth my time I want it to do something new, SAY something about the original text we haven’t seen before instead of just rehashing it for the 50th time

Really enjoyed my visit to Bradford Literature Festival to talk about Jane Austen with Caroline Sanderson and Lizzie Dunford of Jane Austen’s House And luckily I had Natalie Jenner's amazing new novel, Austen at Sea to sustain me on the long hot journey back.

"What dreadful Hot weather we have! -- It keeps one in a continual state of Inelegance." Jane Fairquacks has the right idea but unfortunately I don't think I can really write from the paddling pool ...

Jane Austen has featured on the blog and I wrote about Pride & Prejudice adaptations for the i newspaper, but until today I had never done a blogpost about P&P. And now I have: Kitty's cough, some characters reconsidered, and the question of the gardener clothesinbooks.blogspot.com/2025/07/finall…

Natalie Jenner’s triumphant new book Austen at Sea is a clever and moving exploration of what Jane has come to mean to readers, but it’s also a love story and a feminist thriller. In a bumper year for new Austen-related books, this is a must-read!
