Mental note: If you’re a 44 year old teacher and played hard in the Staff vs Students basketball game, so that it irritated your asthma; you maybe should not play Sharks and Minnows just as hard, in the cold, a few days later. Tired and sore! #wedidntwin #butwetried !

A1: Sorry I’m late to the party!!! Random = chaos! Never random! šŸ˜‚Groups work best for me when either Well thought out and either teacher choice or student choice. Teacher choice is more preferred, especially when assigning difficult work!

A2: Depends upon task. If I’m strengthening a specific skill, I will use homogeneous groups and match students based on habits/character and personality. If I’m having them complete a challenging task together, heterogeneous based on skill level. ā¤ļø when students become teachers!

A3: Norms! I love for groups to create their own norms! Learning to use task cards! Definitely need to hone in on that skill to promote more group independence and student success!

A4: Often my groups will be a bit bigger, so I will allow them to break into mini groups or partners. That allows for some students to feel less overwhelmed. Looking for other ideas on this one! As we learn groups, I often use practicing, pausing, praising, repeat.

Q5: Please tell me the secret to the sauce! šŸ˜‚ For me, groups take a LOT of practice before becoming effective. They can have it one day and not the next! Some days it’s definitely a struggle! Others it’s like, why don’t we do this more often! Need to improve my consistency game!

•Celebrate growth as often as possible. From behaviors to academics, students need wins and so do we. My principal encourages us to send home 3 positive messages a week and it really shifts my mindset. Celebrate your students out loud, in class.

When I set up my office this summer, I wanted a space for students to explore sensory and literacy, to chill and to learn. I love this moment!

Something I’m learning about myself is I love studying languages - how they form words and what those words mean. Found this thread interesting and so cool!
