It's #BatWeek! Join us over the next several days as we explore and learn about bats. #DYK Bats are critical to the health of our public lands, and to our lives. As the primary predator of night flying insects, bats consume tons of forest and agricultural pests each year.

Nothing spookier than "spiders" dropping from the sky on Halloween. Actually, this footage was taken during the 2004-08 eruption of #MountStHelens. These temporary monitoring stations were slung into the crater by helicopter and collected data on earthquakes and lava dome growth.

The ghost of VALT haunts CVO? Anxious about damage to the station from #MountStHelens' advancing Crater Glacier, a CVO field team dismantled the VALT monitoring station on June 6, 2024. USGS' Erin Lysne keeps its memory alive with this costume she created for Halloween.

Seismometers detect all kinds of ground vibrations. On Oct 27, seismometers on the SW side of #MountStHelens detected the rumbling of minor debris flows (thick slurries of mud and rock) that traveled short distances during a heavy rainfall event. No damage done.
