With input and other costs rising,interesting to compare our (low rainfall northern SA) wheat COP with 2 yrs ago. Up say $90/tonne. Ok if pricing holds at current levels

For what it is worth I have been experimenting with a simple index over past two years to support intuition with dry seeding decisions. Idea is to update with new experiences. I’ve certainly found it useful to straighten up the thoughts

1. A follow up on earlier tweet about a decision support index for dry seeding which has created a bit of interest (with emphasis on support (not replacing intuition)). Why would we adopt such a process?

2. Why do we adopt anything. 3 things.Dissatisfaction with current position Decision making is difficult.We found this clarified and focused our thoughts

3. The value proposition of the change.This process gives us an effective review system. If the dry seeding doesn’t work which of the critical factors did we get wrong?

4. Easy way forward. Once the index is set up it is 5 minutes work to implement. Simple and effective

Interesting discussions at the WA GRDC FBU around many subjects including techniques to measure risk.The new 5 year GRDC risk initiative will explore this further.Great enthusiasm amongst local farmers following excellent last 2 years ⁦GRDC South⁩ ⁦GRDC West⁩

This should be the last re-fuel for the 2023 season. Don’t ever recall finishing seeding in April before. Has TOS risk moved from “too late” to the front end of the season?

Hail damage on our Mambray Creek property last night. Our estimate is 50-100% on wheat, 100% on canola. Not widespread but would have been active while it was happening
