Here is a link to my review in the RUSI Journal of Ben Barry’s book, Blood, Metal and Dust: How Victory Turned into Defeat in Afghanistan and Iraq. He questions rightly in my view strategic competence in Whitehall, still very much a relevant concern today? url310.tandfonline.com/ls/click?upn=o…

What a surprise in Central London’s Green Park & St James’s Park today. Not football fans but herds of elephants! All in the good cause of conservation.

Finally, aged 66.5 years, I managed to visit ‘my’ hill, Hill of Mungo, & Mungo Wood, near Huntly in Aberdeenshire today, accompanied by my 34 year-old son, Stuart. We enjoyed a great walk together but failed to locate St Mungo’s Well! I can recommend this corner of Scotland.

This is set to be a fascinating event looking as much forward as back to the events of 80 years ago. A great opportunity for Corps of Royal Engineers & British Army 🇬🇧 to learn about the forgotten art & technique of mine warfare. Do join in.

A lovely family morning walk at Stourhead this morning, but not yet at its full Autumnal glory. Nonetheless the gardens were packed with those enjoying the splendid show of nature’s colours. Well worth a visit at any time of year.

The launch of this work, a product of 5 years of research, writing and editing, takes place today. Proud & honoured to have been entrusted by Institution of Royal Engineers to lead the project & to edit the volume. There’s much to learn from its pages, not only for Corps of Royal Engineers but also the Army
