This afternoon we wanted to show you a side of an appliance most people cannot see (the back of the Greenwich Gem). Here you will see the water and steam pressure gauges. Personally we think that this appliance is not only a useful tool, but a work of art.

The oldest artefact we have in the Museum is called a cleike (pictured here, it's from the 15th c. Cleikes were used to pull down thatch from roofs, haul down burning timbers and unsafe walls. Our cleikes were discovered in the mid 20th c buried in a Edinburgh Castle dungeon.

Today on 16 January 1978 the first official National Firefighter's Strike came to an end after nine weeks. The strike was about low wages and long work weeks. Over the years the pay had not kept up with the cost of living due to high inflation.
