Tonight is the first of #MyFestiveRoyalBorough's Christmas Lights Switch On events, just across the river in Eton! Food stalls, fun-fair rides, music, dancing and all the fun of Christmas! Kicking off in and around Jubilee square from 5pm Christmas lights switch on at 7pm

Today marks 200 years since the current #WindsorBridge opened (known officially as Windsor Town Bridge). It replaced a series of wooden bridges that had connected communities in Windsor & Eton for centuries.   Photo = Engraving by James Carter of the newly built Windsor Bridge.

Charles Hollis was chosen as the architect – a natural choice considering he was the man behind the successful rebuild of Windsor Parish Church. His design for the bridge included three cast iron span arches and two granite pillars to support the bridge in mid-stream.

The foundation stone for the bridge was laid in July 1822 by Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (brother of George IV). We currently have on display the ceremonial trowel used. It’s part of our exhibition celebrating Windsor Bridge. Visit us to learn more!
