🐀 Mud. Shells. And rats! On the Western Front, all armies had a common enemy: the humble trench rat. With constant food waste, unburied corpses & poor sanitation the front lines were a paradise for rats. Here’s why they were so feared & so hard to eradicate. 🧵👇

The work is now finished to Joseph Boussu’s grave. As you can see from the first photo, no one had looked after his grave for a long time. Today it’s been completely overhauled; a new cross, and a new plaque. A grave befitting for Joseph, “Mort Pour La France”. #ww1 #1gm #somme

14 Aug 1896, Albert Ball, VC, DSO & Two Bars, MC, British fighter pilot in #WW1, born. When died on 7 May 1917, was UK's leading flying ace & remained its 4th-highest scorer. On hearing of his death, German ace Manfred von Richthofen, said he was "by far best English flying man".

Delville Wood Cemetery was something of a surprise to the landowner when returning to the Somme after WW1, - nobody had asked his permission to build it - an issue which came up during negotiations to build the Scots memorial at High Wood🫢

This created an instant gulf, perhaps unrepairable, between returning soldier and civilian who had no clue as to what they had experienced. #vjday2025
