On this day in Halifax History, 1788-The Hillsborough Convention comes to an end, with NC failing to ratify the US Constitution. Two of Halifax's leaders--William R. Davie for the Federalists and Willie Jones for the Whigs, squared off regarding a strong Federal Government.

(1/3) Richard Barfield (b. 1825) was an accomplished free black #artisan in the Albemarle during the antebellum era. He was employed several times at Somerset Place b/n 1856-60. He installed faux marble on the baseboards of the Collins Home (below) and #painted the Lake Chapel.

Roller skates have seen many modifications and improvements since their introduction in the 18th century. This pair from the North Carolina Transportation Museum’s permanent collection date from the 1950s and are similar to those introduced by James Leonard Plimpton in 1863.
