Yesterday we came together to celebrate #VEDay80. Thank you to everyone who joined us. We were honoured to be joined by FR Paul Cartwright, Mayor of Wakefield & Mayor of Kirklees 2025-26. Together, we remembered and honoured all those who served in the war, including the brave Bevin Boys.

All of us at National Coal Mining Museum were proud to host a very special event today: the launch of Brian Elliott’s major new publication ‘Miners at War’. Thank you Paul Brookes for such poignant poetry readings and Andy Featherstone for sharing his remarkable memorabilia collection too.

Alongside today’s book launch, Mayor Cllr Darren Byford & Brian Elliott officially revealed new permanent displays here at National Coal Mining Museum. They’re dedicated to the stories of miners who contributed so much in wartime, including the remarkable ‘Tunnellers’ of the First World War.

This weekend, we had the honour of attending the Glass Checks Commemorative Event at the National Coal Mining Museum, marking 10 years of the Memorial Garden. It was a moving day of remembrance - celebrating the courage, hard work, and spirit of those who shaped our mining heritage.
