#OnThisDay in 1904, famed potter Ben Owen Sr. was born in Moore County. Owen produced masterful work at Jugtown Pottery in Seagrove for more than 30 years. Owen’s work is in the Louvre, the Met, the Smithsonian, and the NC Museum of History. Photo of Owen by Bayard Wootten.

#OnThisDay in 1946, heavyweight champion boxer Jack Johnson died in a car crash. While driving near Franklinton, his car struck a utility pole. He was transferred to St. Agnes Hospital in Raleigh, the closest hospital that accepted Black patients, where he died of his injuries.

Happy #NationalSewingMachineDay! Elias Howe did not invent the sewing machine, but he was granted the first sewing machine-related US patent in 1846. This 1954 Singer sewing machine toy from our collection attaches to a table and is operated by turning a hand crank on the side.

Happy #WorldDollDay! In 1983 the Cabbage Patch Kids doll started what is believed to have been the first toy craze. Riots, injuries, and arrests ensued with desperate customers battling over the toy. The dolls were popular throughout the 1980s, but nothing to the extent of 1983.

This Ken is a #TextileTuesday! Introduced by Mattel Inc. in 1961, Kenneth Sean “Ken” Carson Jr. was the “main squeeze” for Barbie. While the original Ken doll sold for $3.50, this Ken hit shelves circa 1963, dressed for a day at the beach, and retailed for approximately $2.29.
