Scab risk for very susceptible and susceptible varieties has increased. I am expecting scab risk increase in most areas of the state after this weekend (high humidity and sporadic thunderstorms forecasted). Monitor growth stages in fields and prepare for fungicide decisions.

Leaf rust (very low incidence) on spring wheat was reported yesterday in southeast ND. Yield loss risk from rust will depend on variety susceptibility and growth stage. Most of the wheat crop should escape rust yield loss concerns, but pay attention to the latest planted wheat.

Came across bacterial leaf streak in both hard red spring wheat and spring barley today. Starting to receive more reports in ND. Reminder: fungicides will not manage these diseases.

Scab risk update: The weather from this past weekend has increased scab risk for a large majority of ND. High humidity, prolonged dews, and rain are very favorable for scab. A view from our NDSU Small Grain Disease Model:

Reminders about FHB/scab timing. Our target for HRSW and durum is at early-flowering and up to 7 days after . For barley, our target is at full-head and up to 7 days later. Research suggests a fungicide applied during these stages provides good FHB and DON/VOM suppression.

Scab risk update: Scab risk remains moderate to high for several areas of the state. The areas of greatest concern are east of the Missouri River, NW ND, and NE ND. Sporadic rain storms and long dew periods will likely keep risk elevated.

Open for 5 more days! Andrew Friskop et al. conducted field experiments from 2014 to 2019 to quantify the effects of host resistance, fungicide, and fungicide timing on management of FHB and DON and yield protection in spring barley. Read the results: doi.org/10.1094/PHP-05….
