For over a decade, National Geographic Pristine Seas (National Geographic Pristine Seas) has explored some of the most vital places in the ocean using a multidisciplinary approach to help create marine reserves. Take a behind-the-scenes look at what happens on an expedition.

Returning to the southern Line Islands last year, we hoped for small signs of hope after a massive warming event in 2015-16. What we found instead was an astonishing coral rebirth and evidence of the incredible resilience of marine protected areas.

Since 2008, National Geographic Pristine Seas has carried out expeditions in 36 places, 25 of which have since been protected, covering a total area of more than 6.5 million square kilometers — more than twice the size of India.
