Our Easter theme is birds 🦚. Some bird feathers are iridescent. These feathers have special microscopic structures which split light and create a shimmery colour. Peacock feathers are a great example.

It's a bank holiday weekend and we're open bank holiday Monday 21 April. Pop into the Museum for a mooch in our galleries and enjoy a cuppa and cake from the cafe.

🐧It’s #WorldPenguinDay Say hello to our macaroni penguin. During incubation & chick raising, many birds reinforce their pair bond. These behaviours occur in male–female & same-sex partnerships. Bonded male penguins in captivity have successfully raised chicks when given an egg.

On Mondays when the museum is closed we work in the galleries. Recently we repainted the wall where this beautiful sailfish model usually hangs. Removing it gave us a chance to check out its condition close up. #NHMTring #Fish #Sailfish

Our garden volunteers have been busy bees 🐝working on our grounds. Recently they've tidied up the beds in the quadrangle making it look beautiful and attracting to pollinating insects.

On Mondays when the museum is closed, we work in the galleries. This week our volunteers are doing a condition survey of the taxidermy fish in Gallery 3. Some are models, some are taxidermy and many are over 100 years old!

We were thrilled to find this common spotted orchid on our front lawn. We decided to reduce the amount of times we mow this lawn and now its gone from short grass to beautiful wild flowers. We've spotted lots of insects too! #GardenWildlifeWeek

The Pomeranian  dog was a great favourite of Queen Victoria - and in those days, if the Queen liked something, everyone liked it! Originally Pomeranian dogs were quite a large breed, but selective breeding reduced their size: our example is only 18cm to its shoulders. #Dog #Tring

Ahoy! It's #WorldOceansDay Who doesn't love a deep sea angler fish? These carnivorous fish have a lure on their heads which contain bioluminescent bacteria. The lure can pulse to attract prey for the fish, whilst the bacteria have access to shelter and nutrients. #Fish #NHMTring

No-one quite knows how the Dalmation dog came to Europe, but they were fashionable by the 19th Century. However, it was the book "101 Dalmatians" and the follow-on film that really put the breed on the map and they have been popular pets ever since!
