George corresponded from the Stalag with Miss Jean C. Lees, a shorthand typist living at 83 Hallcraig St, Airdrie. On 06/12/1942 George suggests to Jean that they get engaged if she is prepared to wait for him, a proposal to which she had agreed by 28/03/1943. 2/4 #VEDay80

In his letters George talks about the hard work he is put to, injuries sustained, and the camaraderie with other POWs especially from England. Then a letter of 19/09/1944 reveals that George and other had escaped from the camp, a story which was covered in the press. 3/4 #VEDay80

When George Loudon eventually returned home, Jean C. Lees had indeed waited for him and they got married in Airdrie on 16 April 1945, just weeks before the official end of the war. 4/4 #VEDay80
