Today is #MarineMammalRescueDay! We are grateful to all of our partners who help us coordinate rescue efforts for marine mammals in distress, like this team who recently helped an adult gray whale entangled in a gillnet off Southern California: fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/…

NOAA Fisheries filed an emergency action that opened theĀ Northeast multispecies fishery on May 1, 2025. This ensures the fishery can continue without interruption and supports fishing communities by keeping Northeast groundfish fishermen on the water. fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/…

There are 700,000–1 million species in the ocean, but roughly 2/3 of them haven't been discovered. How can we protect them if we don’t know they exist? That’s why we explore the ocean. Learn about the dozens of species our scientists have discovered fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/…

Why is exploring the oceans important? If we don't know about the millions of species that live there, we’re not interested in them. Exploration is a critical first step in that process—raising awareness of these species, and learning about them so we can manage and protect them.
