Something for North Tyneside Council North Tyneside Labour Councillors Cllr Karen Clark to mull over, as they abandon plans for a cycle route to a secondary school. Enabling children & young people to cycle to school is one of the easiest ways of dealing with inactivity & obesity. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

We're pleased to see some coverage of our concerns over the abandonment of the Preston Road cycle scheme, highlighting our questions about how this fits with North Tyneside Council's commitments to active travel, net zero, and safe routes to school - and about the funding. Just reviewing the plans for phase 2 of the Seafront Sustainable Route (aka Sunrise Cycleway 🌅🚲😊) and spotted this. Now North Tyneside Council have abandoned the Preston Rd route and made no substantive progress on the Tynemouth Rd route, how is access to North Shields being improved?

Ped & cycle tunnel closed since 31st Oct, with some bus replacement, but big gaps in the timetable. And the ferry is on reduced crossings. It’s almost like no one cares how those walking and cycling might reliably get across the river.

The tunnels have now been closed since 31st Oct, with a couple of brief openings. There’s an intermittent bus replacement but this is a huge inconvenience for those walking & cycling. Can you imagine the storm if the car tunnels were closed for more than 2 weeks?

Tunnels closed again today, and comments here and on Facebook show how unreliable the bus is for getting people on foot and on bike to work (and elsewhere) across the river. This has to be taken more seriously. North Tyneside Council Official South Tyneside Council North East Combined Authority Kim McGuinness
