Earthworms can be an important indicator of soil health, which is critical for NZ's pastoral agriculture. In a just published research article, our own Nicole Schon & colleagues have identified population targets that maximise soil function. Read more at: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

HAPPY WORLD SOIL DAY !! 5th Dec 2023 🪱Soils vary greatly from one location to another. 🪱 It is very important to understand what kind of soil you are dealing with and what its capabilities are… 🪱 Look at the variation in appearance of soils even just within New Zealand….

68 site years of hectare/annual scale #carbon balances of NZ grazed dairy pastures. sciencedirect.com/science/articl… What did we find? 👇

louis schipper (@louisschipper) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Pasture renewal and the transition between pasture and crops resulted in reduced C inputs from photosynthesis of between −232 and −94 g C/m2. That is, carbon losses of 0.9 to 2.3 t/ha when there is periodic cropping in a pasture-dominated system. 👇

Conventional ryegrass/white clover pastures were more beneficial for C stocks than alternative pasture species and mixes. That is, no obvious improvement of carbon balances with increased plant diversity
