why is it that the RNN folks in comp neuro make especially accessible tutorials that guide entry into research-level material? are there similar examples in any other subfields of comp neuro / ML? youtube.com/watch?v=k5bQnP…

Did an in-person presentation for the first time in 2.5 years! I was internally panicking from the start and my brain went blank in the last 20 minutes but I survived. Probably because of the engaging crowd with such nice ideas:) Its so nice to be in-person with colleagues!

New preprint led by Ariel Goldstein provides evidence that IFG (Broca’s area) encodes language using a continuous vectorial representation ("brain embeddings") with strikingly similar geometry to contextual embeddings derived from deep language models: doi.org/10.1101/2022.0…

🚨NEW PREPRINT w/ David Broockman. We conducted a real-world experiment to study the effects of partisan media. In Sept 2020, we paid people who normally watch Fox News to instead watch CNN. Median person was paid $15/hour for 7 hrs/week for 4 wks to watch CNN. Thread on results 1/

People like to say Twitter isn't real life--it's too partisan and politicized. Our new preprint w/ K0k!l J and Yphtach Lelkes ("The Political Landscape of the U.S. Twitterverse") suggests that, actually, maybe it is: Politics is a sideshow on here. OSF: osf.io/w98ms/🧵 1/n

This repo contains all my notes for the "Introduction to Deep Learning" course from MIT. The notes are great for studying fundamentals and new topics in ML. I put them in Notion so you can easily extend them. More exciting ML content is on its way! github.com/dair-ai/ML-Cou…

Excited to announce that my first first-authored paper is out now in Science Advances doi.org/10.1126/sciadv… We collected 1 million+ memory ratings to show that semantic properties best explain what we remember. Major thanks to Wilma Bainbridge Martin Hebart Chris Baker

In my preprint with Wilma Bainbridge, we tried to train participants to learn image memorability. Though they improved slightly, participants never reached the level of the DNN ResMem, suggesting that we are unable to access memorability’s full variance: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

In this new preprint we use data from millions of online chess games to show that mechanisms of reinforcement learning and social learning that are normally studied in the lab influence complex decisions that are learned over months, such as how to start a game of chess.

Joey beat me to posting again, but I am beyond excited to share my first paper in the Awh Vogel lab! The highlights are in the title - we looked at neural signatures of spatial attention and WM load simultaneously and found that they are independently manipulable!
