.Eurasia Group is very lucky to have Amanda Hsiao 萧嫣然 on board. I had the privilege of working with her at Crisis Group, and I look forward to continuing to learn from her. Congratulations, friend!

My advice to journos covering Syria: this is a complex story to tell with a criminal regime, bad actors, foreign influence & uncertainty of what's to come. Tell complex stories, but center your stories in the agency of Syrians. It's their story, their country, their freedom.

Israel now borders Turkey. While this means little in the short term as Ankara focuses on state-building in Syria, it could reshape the Middle East’s balance of power within a generation. More in my book, coming October 2025. Polity

Notable to see Operation Inherent Resolve U.S. Forces actually sharing images of partnering w/ Syrian Democratic Forces in areas west of Hasakah Province. Good public information warfare designed to reassure SDF while deterring SNA/Türkiye. Recommended next step: Invite media embeds. Normalize embeds. #Syria

President Carter taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from this remarkable man. barackobama.medium.com/our-statement-…

We lost a great man—President Carter, a true statesman and humanitarian, who devoted his life to securing lasting peace in the Middle East. As I told AL-Monitor, for the past 40 years, the Camp David Accords and the Carter Doctrine have been cornerstones of U.S. Middle East

Honored to contribute toĀ National Interest’sĀ Tech Policy SymposiumĀ on the U.S.-China tech competition.Ā I outline three urgent priorities for U.S. competitiveness: streamlining regulations, building innovation zones, and closing the STEM gap. nationalinterest.org/blog/techland/…

Wishing my Muslim friends—at home & worldwide—a rejuvenating Ramadan. May we deepen our passion to heal every soul in need, esp those facing war, poverty or authoritarianism. As the Holy Quran says ā€œWhoever saves a life it is as though he had saved the lives of all mankind.ā€

This weekend, read "Foreign Policy for the Working Class"—my latest with Andrew Hanna. Tertullian asked, ā€œWhat has Athens to do with Jerusalem?ā€ Today, we ask: What do D.C., NYC, and Silicon Valley have to do with the working class? Here is our answer: Ā  nationalinterest.org/feature/toward…

Lot of controversy in South Asia over VP Vance's comments about the India-Pakistan crisis. Video clip provides more context, but a bigger point is that the issue of US activism in world politics has been a source of contention among the US public for a while. See Pew's trend too

It was great to be back on Becky Anderson’s show to reflect on the major U.S.–Saudi deals announced during President Trump’s visit to Riyadh for the Investment Forum. The Gulf, in Trump’s view, is the ā€œnew Europeā€ā€”a regional powerhouse of capital and ambition. Middle East Institute
