A turning point in the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg ended #OTD in 1863. Though his role in the war is often minimized, General George Meade commanded the victorious Union Army in the battle and was honored with a grand statue in #WashingtonDC.

John Paul Jones was born in Arbigland, Scotland on July 6, 1747. Gaining experience as a merchant captain, Jones came to Virginia in 1773 and later joined the cause of revolution. A hero of the early U.S. Navy, he is honored with a dramatic statue near the World War II Memorial.

Just like the fireworks last week, summer flowers around the National Mall are bursting with color! Bright yellow black-eyed susans and purple coneflowers are native to this area, vital pollinator plants, and can be admired throughout the park. #WashingtonDC #flowers

The names of more than 58,000 Americans who died as a result of their service in Vietnam are listed chronologically (alphabetically by day) on the walls of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Major Dale Buis & Master Sergeant Chester Ovnand – killed #OTD in 1959 – are listed first.

40 years & 5 days after the United States declared independence from the British, Argentina proclaimed its separation from Spain, joining other nations in severing their colonial bonds. A statue of Argentine Revolutionary hero José de San Martín stands a few blocks off the Mall.

After successfully driving the Nazis out of North Africa, American & British forces began the invasion of Sicily #OTD in 1943. An important victory over rugged terrain against a determined enemy, the Sicily Campaign is listed on the Atlantic fountain in the World War II Memorial.

Our Tree Crew is small but mighty! After coming back to work last night to clear the roads after severe storms swept over #WashingtonDC, they got started again this morning, clearing the paths and removing the downed trees & limbs. Great work, team!

In the summer of 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. released “Strength to Love,” a powerful collection of sermons shaped by his unwavering commitment to justice. Two quotes from the book were inscribed into the walls of his memorial on the National Mall. #WashingtonDC

The Battle of Fort Stevens was the only Civil War battle fought in #WashingtonDC. #OTD in 1864, President Lincoln visited the fort to observe the fighting and stood on the walls within range of Confederate sharpshooters. It ended with a Union victory.
