A turning point in the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg ended #OTD in 1863. Though his role in the war is often minimized, General George Meade commanded the victorious Union Army in the battle and was honored with a grand statue in #WashingtonDC.

Thanks to our staff, contractors, and volunteers, the National Mall is looking good following the Independence Day celebration. Trash is being collected and we're continuing to pick up fireworks debris. Locations closed for yesterday's events are reopening. Come enjoy the park!

40 years & 5 days after the United States declared independence from the British, Argentina proclaimed its separation from Spain, joining other nations in severing their colonial bonds. A statue of Argentine Revolutionary hero José de San Martín stands a few blocks off the Mall.
