Not all landowners are operators and choose to rent out the land to what are called tenant farmers. While districts across the state have different percentages of owners vs. renters, the average equals out to an even 50/50. #AgFactFriday

June is Pollinator Month! Flies are the second-most important group of pollinators (behind bees) mostly because of their hairy bodies. You can tell bees and flies apart a few different ways.

In honor of Pollinator Month, we're continuing to learn more about pollinators this week. Contrary to popular belief, most bees nest in the ground and are considered solitary. Only honeybees live in a hive and are considered social.

Many insects feed on flower nectar and protein. Nectar, which is basically sugar water, is a carbohydrate with trace amounts of amino acids and micronutrients. Pollen on the other hand, is a protein, and its makeup is different for each floral source.

Did you know only female bees can sting? Ovipositors are long, straw-like structures some insects have and are used for laying eggs. As only females lay eggs, they’re the only ones with ovipositors and in turn, the only ones with stingers.

As we’re wrapping up Pollinator Month, let's remember that bees aren’t the only pollinating species. Flies, butterflies and moths are insect pollinators. Bats and birds, especially hummingbirds, are also pollinators, namely with night-blooming flowers and long, tubular flowers.
