John Wells and his wife Cheryl of Plano, Texas won the distinction of having come the farthest for the Pioneer Picnic, held May 20 in the Chino Community Building. Mr. Wells grew up in Chino and was the valedictorian of Chino High's Class of 1957.

Chino Valley Historical Society President Ryan Cummins, a fourth generation Chino resident and grandson of Betty Wagner Cummins, was the emcee at Chino's Pioneer Picnic on May 20. His children, Samantha, 11, and Leo, 9, are fifth-generation.

Visitors to the Pioneer Picnic on May 20 check out early Chino artifacts at the Old Schoolhouse Museum. It is located at the corner of B and 11th streets. Museum hours are: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month.

Former Chino resident Bob Edwards and his son-in-law Hugo Mitre check out Chino’s old jail, in the park on 11th Street, between B and C streets. In 1913, Chino paid $558 to build the jail. In 1996, it was relocated to its present location. It is only opened on special occasions.
