Congratulations to my advisor, Pablo Olivera Firpo for his well deserved APS (The American Phytopathological Society) Excellence in International Service Award. Making @UMNPlantPath proud!

Had a lot of fun with this talk. Publication coming very soon. Thanks to iNaturalist and everyone who has provided samples or posted an observation of rust on glossy buckthorn

Heads up: nick greatens will deliver his PhD defense on #Puccinia coronata var. coronata and other recently observed #RustFungi in MN on Wed, 5/31, 1pm CT. Anyone is welcome to attend in person or online - Borlaug Hall room 365 or on Zoom at umn.zoom.us/j/96997441582

They got a first-hand look at the fungal infection on the invasive species. U of M Research CFANS @UMNPlantPath cbsnews.com/minnesota/news… Work funded by MN ENRTF

Cereal-infecting rust fungi carry 2⃣ genomes in separate nuclei! With PacBio and Phase Genomics we sort out 30 haplotypes from oat crown rust to uncover nuclear exchange, cryptic recombination, and migration. doi.org/10.1101/2024.0… Jana Sperschneider Melania Figueroa CSIRO 🧵⬇️ 1/4

The sweetgrass I am growing is filled with rust this year. nick greatens found this was crown rust that also attacks buckthorn. Rust or no rust it goes into the sweetgrass braids
