I guess (?) this is an area where broad ethics-oriented technologists and effective altruism-oriented technologists are in agreement: If you let these systems *freely do third party stuff*, you are opening up massive risks. Minimally, that is good to be aware of.

The original AI Act was bad for many reasons (as I have written on). One of them is that a regulation that allows foundation providers to siphon off all the money as platforms while SMEs act as liability magnets because they ‘purpose’ generic models towards risky ends is Bad.

The chaos at OpenAI is the perfect illustration of why the EU’s AI Act needs to impose strict regulatory responsibilities on foundation model providers, instead of relying on goodwill from companies whose leadership and governance structures can be blown up at any moment.

Coming reluctantly out of Twitter holiday (literally - crocodiles and stingrays!) in case anyone has not noticed the new AI Regulation Bill that seems to have suddenly appeared. bills.parliament.uk/publications/5… A (less short than I hoped) thread:

Luca Bertuzzi Protecting general interest will be today our task as co-legislators. The whining and campaigning by „smaller companies“ combined with governments being overperceptive to such lobbying might lead to failure. This would be a huge setback. We will fight for sufficient regulation!

We are the first in the world to set in place real regulation for #AI, and for the future digital world driven by AI, guiding the development and evolution of this technology in a human-centric direction.

NEW: Josh Hawley goes off on Mark Zuckerberg and forces him to stand up, turn around and apologize to families who were impacted by child exploitation on META platforms. Humiliating. "You didn't take any action. You didn't fire anybody." "There's families of victims here
