It is an outrage that Russia has rejected Vladimir Kara-Murza's appeal against his sentence. Vladimir, a British national, has committed no crime. He is a political prisoner, held by Russia in revenge for speaking out against the war, and should be released immediately.

Sentencing Evan Gershkovich to 16 years in a strict penal colony shows the Russian state’s contempt for media freedom. He is a journalist, works for a respected news outlet, and was accredited by the Russian state to work in Russia. He should be released immediately.

I welcome the release of a number of prisoners held in Russia, including Vladimir Kara-Murza, Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich. My thoughts are with them and their loved ones as they are reunited. We will continue to call on Russia to uphold freedom of political expression.
