More evidence that private for-profit clinics are illegally charging fees & upselling patients for optical care. And yet, Doug Ford continues to shunt our tax dollars to these profiteers: $280 million in the recent budget! bit.ly/4dOmVsC

Majority of Ontarians are opposed to this privatization - based on a recently conducted poll at the end of May. We'll be releasing full findings of the survey at a media conference at Queen's Park on Monday morning #onpoli

"The 4 patients who spoke to the Star are older adults who were worried that they might forever damage their vision if they didn’t get surgery for their cataracts..[they] also said they didn’t think they were given all the info they needed to make a decision about whether to pay"

New poll shows Ontarians reject this privatization scheme of the conservative government. Our media conference at Queen's Park this morning will reveal more information. Stay tuned.

Defend public healthcare: The yellow sections represent the most affluent Ontario neighbourhoods. Research shows that it's people in these areas who are gaining access to care from private clinics while the rest of us suffer. No such discrimination in accessing hospital care.

In Hamilton, like most communities, the wealthiest (in yellow) now have greatly increased access to for-profit cataract surgeries, while access fell for everyone else (blue), the poorest faring worst. Public hospitals, CMAJ found, provide equal access regardless of income.

In Cornwall, all but the most wealthy lose access to for-profit cataract surgeries. People in rural ridings must travel to larger urban centres where the for-profit clinics are located. The public hospital in Cornwall provides equal access, without cost.

Privatization does NOT work! Wait-times for cataract surgeries in Ontario have gone up: 2019: 72% surgeries performed on time 2024: 66% Plus, the most affluent are jumping the queue by paying out of pocket leaving most people further behind. Stop privatizing our health care!

"One patient in her 80s was told it would be 2-3 years until she could get the eye surgery she needed in a hospital unless she paid to have it done at the clinic. She was charged just under $7,000 for the procedure." Didn't Mr. Ford promise no fees? thetrillium.ca/insider-news/p…

Patients report being charged the full cost of cataract surgery along with other fees, contradicting the Premier’s promise that no one will be charged. Sylvia Jones attacks the Ontario Health Coalition instead of ending the fiasco of for-profit surgeries.

A private clinic illegally charged Maureen nearly $7,000 for cataract surgery. She had to borrow money from her bank to pay for her operation. Read about our formal complaint filed on behalf of 50 patients who were charged at private clinics 👇 thestar.com/news/canada/ca… #onpoli

Faced with countless stories of patients charged for their cataract surgeries or upsold by for-profit clinics, the Ontario government can offer nothing but disparaging comments about the Health Coalition. These stories soundly refute the Premier's promise that no one would pay.

Triage told the MD there was a febrile newborn. The child was seen immediately overnight. Pediatrics was called immediately. Investigations were sent immediately. The child was admitted immediately. This won't make the news but is Canada's publicly funded system. Not broken.

Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones says contracting cataract surgeries to private clinics is working to reduce wait times. Truth is wait times have worsened, everyone but the wealthy have lost access and costs have doubled.

Before a paramedic, fired by York Region for posting against genocide in Gaza, received a termination letter, her firing was tweeted by a member of the public. This stunning violation of the worker’s privacy rights lays bare the political nature of this discharge. Reinstate her.
