GM POV from the Fort Augustus Abbey (now modern apartments) at the South tip of Loch Ness Built in 1729 as a military fort, the dismantled buildings were bought by Lord Lovat in 1867 and given to Benedictine monks in 1876. The monastery was completed in 1880 (operated until 1998)
