The last SPECTRA* cruise begins! Against a foggy backdrop, the R/V Sally Ride sails out of Yaquina Bay to begin work in the northern California Current. *SPECTRA is short for “Plankton Size Spectra and Trophic Links in a Dynamic Ocean,” an NSF-funded project.

SPECTRA: It’s a wrap! <post by Su Sponaugle, OSU Professor and SPECTRA co-PI) Yesterday the R/V Sally Ride glided gracefully into port. The science team celebrated the end of the cruise, and Chief Scientist (mustachioed) Bob Cowen by surprising him with their “own” facial hair!

Our 2023 REU student, Sadie Lorenz, freshly back from sea, presented on the research she conducted with us this summer. She travels back to UNH in a few days…we’ll miss her cheerful outlook and enthusiasm! Thanks for all your work and for sharing your positive energy, Sadie!

New lab paper published! A new take on an older coral reef fish data set! In this collaborative effort, “terrestrial” modelers re-analyzed an older field dataset to provide insight into how juvenile coral reef fish behavior influences their early survival. frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…
