For #plasticfreejuly we're sharing the great work our group is doing on #plastics #microfibers and #pesticides too! Kicking it off with Lauren Kashiwabara (she/her), Ph.D. student studying coastal food webs! Here she's deploying light traps to sample coastal zooplankton for #microplastics 🐋🦐

For #plasticfreejuly we're sharing the great work our group does on #plastics #microfibers & #pesticides too! #SamArriola is an undergrad researcher bravely conquering #biosolid samples! Here he's vacuum filtering MPs after density separation. He starts PharmToxUCD this fall!

Super excited to be traveling to Bangkok in August to participate in one of two expert groups for intersessional work, in support of the global plastics treaty negotiations. Scientists' Coalition for Effective PlasticsTreaty UN Environment Programme pnwmicroplastics

For #plasticfreejuly we're sharing the great work our group does on #plastics #microfibers & #pesticides too! Miranda's work investigates the toxicity of chemical & micro- or nanoparticle components of #stormwater runoff and tire rubber in freshwater organisms. EMT Dept OSU OSU Ag Sciences

For #plasticfreejuly we're sharing the great work our group does on #plastics #microfibers & #pesticides too! #ClarissaRaguso is a visiting PhD student from Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca in Italy, studying new & weathered #tire particle effects in fish, & #fibers in shrimp. For #plasticfreejuly we’re sharing the great work our consortium does on #plastics & other pollutants too! Patrick is a fish technician with many other talents, e.g. sampling and installing washer filters in coastal towns to mitigate microfibers! Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station pnwmicroplastics

For #plasticfreejuly we’re sharing the great work our consortium does on #plastics & other pollutants too! Kate Berreman is a grad student studying effects of #pesticides on euryhaline fish. Here she is extracting samples to conduct RNA seq! Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station EMT Dept OSU OSU Hatfield

New research released focused on the presence of microplastics in 16 protein-based foods commonly found in supermarkets. “The hypothesis is that these particles could interfere with cell function and cause muscle tissue inflammation.” - Susanne Brander foodqualityandsafety.com/article/microp…

They found a correlation between processed foods and the amount of microplastics found in them. The concern is that microplastics have been found all over the human body and as a cause of myocardial toxicity. Big Fish Lab “Our continued research on this species in Oregon and Washington waters will allow us to have a better handle on its role in our valuable marine ecosystems,” -Schulte OSU Fisheries, Wildlife, & Conservation Sciences @osu_coastal

For #plasticfreejuly we’re sharing the great work our consortium does on #plastics & other pollutants! To finish off July, Venecia is studying #microplastics in Pacific lamprey, an ambitious project with an important native species! Big Fish Lab Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station OSU's Alexandra McInturf and her colleagues tagged the 7-meter female basking shark off the coast of Ireland on April 24th. More research needs to be done, but this could be indicative of the frequency of these collisions.
