Today in Congreso, we urged MPs to push for strict protection of at least 10% of Spain’s seas by 2030. Current coverage is under 0.1%. Strict protection fully safeguards key marine areas from extractive activities like destructive fishing & mining: europe.oceana.org/es/press-relea…

We welcome today’s European Commission decision to reduce Finland’s 🇫🇮 salmon quota for unauthorised fishing of it in the #BalticSea, which sends a clear signal that it will not tolerate breaking of rules, like the #CommonFisherisPolicy, at sea. 🎣🌊 👉 europe.oceana.org/press-releases…

Happy #DeepDay! Today we celebrate the #DeepSea and the people working to protect it. The deep sea is under threat from destructive mining. Let knowledge, not exploitation, shape our ocean’s future. Join the call for a global moratorium. ➡️ DefendTheDeep.org

Seguim

🚨 One of the EU’s oldest nature law is on the chopping block, being reopened so that countries can weaken wolf protection - despite scientific advices. Right now, it’s the wolf. But what’s next? ✊ Don’t let short-term politics destroy decades of progress. #HandsOffNature

Trawling remains a serious threat to endangered marine species. We call on Spain to ban destructive fishing gear in Marine Protected Areas to safeguard vulnerable wildlife and their habitats.🐬🌊

Today is #EuropeDay, a good moment to reflect on what the EU has done to protect our ocean. 🇪🇺🌊 But there’s still a long way to go. Oceana campaigns for stronger, science-based marine protection to keep driving real change in Europe. 💙

This week, scientists & NGOs came together at Congreso to deliver a clear message: Spain must drastically increase its strictly protected marine areas. To meet EU targets, Spain must contribute to reach 10% strict protection by 2030. Currently, it stands at less than 0.1%.

🌍In 'Ocean with David Attenborough', the legendary naturalist reveals why our ocean is vital to humanity’s future, & highlights the threats facing our seas. 🎥The film shows the most detailed footage ever of bottom trawling, a destructive practice hidden for decades. #OceanFilm

The leaked #EUOceanPact draft fails to address the elephant in the room: the devastating impact of harmful human activities at sea. Without clear targets, binding measures & funding, it risks becoming yet another well-meaning but toothless strategy. 🌊 ➡️europe.oceana.org/press-releases…

IMO numbers are unique vessel IDs and a basic tool to improve transparency at sea. We urge General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean to make them mandatory for all vessels above 12 metres. Without them, illegal fishing will continue to go undetected. 📄More: europe.oceana.org/reports/enhanc… #FightIUUFishing

Illegal fishing operators take advantage of legal loopholes to hide their identity at sea using "flags of convenience". EU member states must require their citizens to register foreign vessels and make this information public to #EndCorruptionAtSea! #EUOceanPact Learn more⤵️

Fining fishing vessels alone won’t stop illegal fishing. We need transparency on who ultimately profits from it. General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean must ensure countries identify and act against the true beneficiaries of this illegal practice at sea. #FightIUUFishing 📄 europe.oceana.org/wp-content/upl…
