With lunch today Angel & I are having Tignanello 2012, a fab Super Tuscan, mostly sangiovese. #AnorakFact: Giancarlo Fisichella introduced it to me at dinner in Melbourne in 2001; he called it “the Pope’s wine”; if it’s good enough for the Pope & Fisico, it’s good enough for us!

The #BrazilGP used to be held in March/April, & in 2003 it was won by Giancarlo Fisichella. It should have been the first of many #F1 wins for him, for his talent was sublime; but he won only 2 more. My brand-new Motor Sport magazine column (click below) explains why. motorsportmagazine.com/articles/singl…

#OnThisDay in 2000, Montreal specialist Giancarlo Fisichella bagged his 4th consecutive #CanadianGP podium finish (3rd). On a rainy day Fisico (Benetton) raced cleverly to end up best of the rest behind the Ferraris of Michael Schumacher (1st) & Rubens Barrichello (2nd).

#OnThisDay in ’98 Mika Häkkinen (McLaren) won the #AustrianGP - & Giancarlo Fisichella (Benetton) started the race from his first ever #F1 pole position, the result of a superb lap in wet qualifying. Great pic taken by Martyn Elford (son of Vic), who very sadly died recently.

Very impressive #DutchGP pole position just now for Lando Norris - his 4th in #F1 - which places him in good company with Mike Hawthorn, Didier Pironi, Jarno Trulli & Giancarlo Fisichella (pic), who all scored 4 pole positions in F1. Norris will add to that tally soon I’m sure.

#OnThisDay 15 years ago, at Spa, pole man Fisichella led brilliantly for Force India, &, although Räikkönen (Ferrari) drove well to pip him for the win, Fisico, 2nd, was the star of Spa that weekend & every impartial #F1 fan was rooting for him to hang on & win. He nearly did!

The Benetton B201 wasn’t quick, & Button really struggled with it, but #OnThisDay in 2001, at Spa, his team-mate Fisichella coaxed a brilliant 3rd place out of it that it really didn’t deserve, splitting the McLarens of Coulthard (2nd) & Häkkinen (4th). Schumacher won.

#HappyBirthday Giancarlo Fisichella (Giancarlo Fisichella), a truly lovely guy, 52. He won ‘only’ 3 #F1 GPs, but he was viewed at one time as one of the very best, for his natural talent was sublime. Click to read a Motor Sport magazine column I wrote about him. motorsportmagazine.com/articles/singl…

#OnThisDay in 2006 Giancarlo Fisichella drove a superb race from pole to win the #MalaysianGP. His Renault team-mate Fernando Alonso finished 2nd. It was Giancarlo’s 3rd & final #F1 GP win &, astonishingly, 19 long years later, no Italian driver has won an F1 GP since.

#OnThisDay in 2003, at Interlagos, Giancarlo Fisichella brilliantly won an #F1 GP for the first time, for the much missed Eddie Jordan, after a soaking-wet race in which he kept it on the island while many of the more fancied runners binned their cars into the barriers.

#OnThisDay in ’97 Jacques Villeneuve (Williams) won the #ArgentineGP; Eddie Irvine (Ferrari) was 2nd, Ralf Schumacher (Jordan) 3rd. But had Schumi Jr not collided with Jordan team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella (pic), ending his race, Fisico might have won: a golden opportunity lost.
