In his opening remarks, James Frith MP was clear about the issues at play. “Copyright is not an obstacle; it is an infrastructure, a cornerstone of the British economy… Creators must not have to exert their rights for them to exist, or have to sue to keep them”.

Culture, Media and Sport Committee Chair Caroline Dinenage MP noted: “Despite the potential of AI, we know that our creative industries are growing at an incredible rate… that doesn’t happen by accident. These industries rely on the strength of a gold standard British intellectual property regime”.

Anneliese Midgley raised the issue of transparency requirements for AI developers. “Any serious discussion about AI must include a clear demand for transparency from companies developing these tools… Creators deserve to know when and how their work is being used”.
