A belated and temperate but still welcome blow against the business model of the propaganda station GB News. But it’s really not enough. It should be stripped of its UK broadcast licence on the obvious grounds that it can’t adhere to, and doesn’t accept, its legal obligations.

I (doubtless tediously) keep responding to this MP along same lines. Helping immigrants acquire English who lack it is beneficial. But they can’t do it by an act of will, and stigmatising & haranguing them is morally reprehensible. The next generation will inevitably be fluent.

I welcome the agreement on our 17th sanctions package against Russia. We are further restricting access to battlefield technology. And we have listed an additional 189 shadow fleet vessels to target Russia's energy exports. This war has to end. We will keep the pressure high

Bizarrely, Asquith’s grave and Orwell’s lie only a few yards apart in Sutton Courtenay churchyard, Oxfordshire. Touched to be nominated for a novel about one in memory of the other.

Gift from a democracy: chickpea-and-lentil snacks; artisanal mustard. Thank you for gift: handshake and souvenir photo. Gift from an emirate: $400 million jet for personal use and use by heirs. Thank you for gift: a whole lotta political influence and terrorism impunity.

Tim tells a lie, then admits in the very next sentence it's a lie. We have youth mobility deals with a number of countries. NO ONE suggests we have free movement with those countries. The state of the political debate in this country at the moment is truly depressing

I’ve heard this anecdote so often: I wish it were true but it’s not. (The causes of refuting Reform-type xenophobia and defending the Welsh language from demographic decline & prejudice stand on their own merits.)

Am I the last to know? The Qatar jet offered to Trump turns out to be an item unsuccessfully for sale since 2020. The "gift" is not only a Trump grift, but also an attempted scam on the US taxpayer, who will assume costs the owners no longer wish to pay. onemileatatime.com/qatari-royal-f…

RIP Andrew Norfolk, the best of journalists, who fought for truth v powerful forces who didn’t want the grooming gangs story told. He inspired me as a young reporter & it was an honour to have him on The Media Show recently for perhaps his last interview. thetimes.com/article/828cb2…

The PM is absolutely right in his tribute to Andrew, who I spoke with often for Times leaders on the scandals he exposed. He was an outstanding investigative reporter & great colleague. Starmer leads tributes to Andrew Norfolk, who exposed grooming gangs thetimes.com/article/c589b0…
