Good news today that our study of #wildlifetrade on the #darkweb has been published: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/pa… The work led by Oliver Stringham uncovered 153 sp. of plants, animals & fungi for sale. Surface web & social media are still primary avenues for wildlife trade.

#wildlifetrade on the dark web currently serves a niche market for drug use. With open web prevention measures increasing, monitoring the dark web is critical for detecting new trade trends or movements towards it. Congrats Oliver Stringham and team. doi.org/10.1002/pan3.1…

I'm super excited to share the first chapter from my PhD! We examined 14,000 online advertisements to discover which pet birds Australians are interested in, what traits make them popular, and how this relates to the risk of new invasive species 💻🦜🔍 rdcu.be/dtNsV

📰 The occupancy modelling framework offers tremendous flexibility in estimating species abundance and distribution pattern. Donovan et al. introduce occupancyTuts R package that teach the statistical underpinnings of several occupancy models. buff.ly/3HvcJ9d

It’s been just over a year since I left my #research and #academia life behind, and just about a year since I started #freelancing full time as a science journalist. Here’s what I’ve been up to since then – professionally and personally. A🧵(1/15)

New blog post: Why Effect Sizes Selected for Significance are Inflated daniellakens.blogspot.com/2024/02/why-ef… I tried to explain this important topic as clearly as I can. I also explain why bias adjusted estimates are somewhat useful, but Type M errors are not, and how to prevent bias.

Most countries don't publish official sub-national population data. Luckily, there are several geospatial population datasets we can use instead. Here's a list of them (I wish I knew about 5 years ago):

the death of this app has been such a blow to community & info-gathering and I realize I am x-ing this into a void that was once a bustling place but I just want to say it sucks and is fucking up solidarity, learning from each other, trust in media & organizing

Shocked & distressed that Duke University & its Dean @susan_alberts, a renowned biologist in her own right, could support dismantling one of the most important plant collections for research & training. It is the largest herbarium in SE USA. A destructive decision. science.org/content/articl…
