Last night’s #ILGovDebate featured sentiment from Darren Bailey that I cannot allow to go unchecked. He suggested that crime has worsened in Chicago because of “lax enforcement of undocumented immigration” and Chicago’s status as a sanctuary city.

Disparaging immigrants as criminals is a weak debate tool with serious implications. These attacks fuel discourse around immigrants and center fear, stereotype, racism, and xenophobia, not fact, data, or policy. I stand with immigrants, and I call on Darren Bailey to do better.
