Tonight I'm off to BatterseaArtsCentre to see a genuine rarity: Maria de Rudenz by Donizetti. It's another rediscovery by Gothic Opera (they're good at those) and I'll be reviewing it for Opera with Opera News

Interval time at BatterseaArtsCentre and I'm having so much fun. Hats off to Gothic Opera for what they've achieved with Maria de Rudenz. Beautifully staged, a great little band and magical lighting. I can't speak for the alternate cast but this one rocks!

Thank you Gothic Opera for another brilliant night. It's become a highlight of my year. (And only in part because I get to dress up). Also, opera adaptation of Charlotte Dacre's 'Zofloya'? It needs to happen next.

Mark Pullinger Gothic Opera BatterseaArtsCentre Fondazione Donizetti So pleased we agree on this, Mark. The opera was revelation to me. The other cast was tremendous with three outstanding leads. And you're quite right about Luca Panetta's lighting: it transformed the dilapidated stonework into a luxurious stage set.

Welsh National Opera @NoFitState PICK OF THE YEAR (CHAMBER) It was the year Gothic Opera came of age wit not one but two crackers. After DER VAMPYR, hilarious and blood-soaked, they upped sticks to BatterseaArtsCentre with Donizetti’s MARIA DE RUDENZ. Superbly lit by Luca Panetta, it oozed atmosphere and class. 4/6
