"Listen, and understand. It can’t be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead." Kyle describing the Terminator to Sarah / Circe describing Scylla to Odysseus (Odyssey, 12.115)

"The Britons have more spirit than Gauls because they are not a people made soft and lazy by a long peace. Gauls were once famous for their warmongering but then came the easy life and as well as saying goodbye to their freedom, they also said goodbye to their courage." Tacitus

The ancient sound of the Roman cornu - a horn used for signalling troop movements and announcing the presence of the emperor in military and civilian settings. Each legion had 36 cornu players, as well as other trumpet and horn players. Imagine the noise!

'A statesman cannot expect to make money out of the community and to receive its respect as well; for honourable people do not try to make money out of their friends. Indeed, we honour the man who loses his money by holding office.' - Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, 1163b.

2,500 years ago a Greek sculptor began to outline this sculpture of a horse but, for reasons unknown, never completed it. The basic shape was incised into the limestone and was being roughly carved to size, with details like the bridle already indicated. From Sparta, c.500 BC.

Really thrilled that my second book is now published! It explores the life of Tacfarinas, a C1st AD auxiliary soldier-deserter-bandit-rebel who came to lead a revolt against #Rome in NW Africa during the early reign of Tiberius. He is a truly fascinating figure in #Roman history!
