Words of the day: “winter solstice” - the shortest day, today, when the sun reaches its lowest maximum height in the sky — after which light begins its slow climb back and night yields its reach. Midwinter, yule, the year’s pivot, Earth’s rebirth, a dawn of hope.

Word of the day: "flukkra" - large flakes of softly falling snow (Shetland). Compare "hundslappadrĂfa"; lit. "dog's-feet-snow" (Icelandic); "skelvie" (Scots; large-flaked snow); "goose-down snow" (English, regional); & "peaux de liĂšvres", i.e. snow-hare-skin snow (Quebecois).

Two nights ago the Northern Lights made a rare appearance in the skies above the Lake District: glowing scarves of light, swirling above the peaks. My father took this image of the aurora — Orion gleaming, the Milky Way’s aura, and an ancient ash tree keeping time on the earth.

Owen Tromans is reading ‘The Lost Book of Adventure’. This is a perfect pairing for forest schools themed work, or as a parallel text for Katherine Rundell’s ‘The Explorer’, with a range of text types to explore.

These vocabulary cards are based on the work of Fisher, Frey and Hattie Visible Learning. A really simple and effective approach to building vocabulary.

Day 1 - nominated by Jo Kenyon to choose a book I love each day for 5 days. Here’s my much-loved copy of ‘The Little Ghost’. One of the first books I remember reading ‘on my own’. Wonderful still, and check out that title font! I nominate Chris Cheal to share 5 loved books.

Day 2 - I loved ‘Redwall’ by Brian Jacques. Read loads of the series one long summer holiday. Probably started my enthusiasm for intricate setting description (and monastic mice).

Day 3 - Christopher Logue’s reimagining of the Iliad is something I could read again and again. By turns elegant, cinematic and utterly brutal, you can’t really describe it in a tweet. Even writing ‘tweet’ in the company of War Music seems ridiculous.

Day 5 - my favourite book to read aloud to UKS2. Criminally underrated and has inspired fantastic writing. Shades of Alan Garner and even M. R. James here.
