There is a wide array of tombs in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. These styles of tombs are what we called 'Pendant Burials', which were colloquially named this as from the sky, they look like pieces of jewellery. These tombs have been scientifically dated to between c.2700-1800 BCE.

One thing that is hard to capture via photograph is scale. So when we say that #Mustatil are BIG, this video helps demonstrate just HOW BIG. It also shows why alternate theories that they were animal pens, water catchments, or even domestic structures, aren't realistic. #Khaybar

During my chat with Elevated Thoughts Podcast (watch here youtube.com/watch?v=NQgMSP…) I mentioned that sometimes we have to excavate in extreme heats i.e 40 degrees °C (100+ °F). Let me introduce you to IDIHA-0008313- the hottest, and one of the most difficult tombs I have ever excavated. 1/

The journey to the archaeological sites of #AlUla are often long and exhausting. But they are worth it due to the spectacular archaeology in these remote regions, including Bronze Age Pendant tombs (c.2900-1800 BCE) and Mustatil (c.5300-4400 BCE).

Working in both AlUla and Khaybar means we study archaeological structures in a variety of landscapes. Many sites often require big walks/climbs. But it is worth it!
