A man is dead. After sitting in the ACJ since January - unconvicted. Suffering in a jail that is notoriously understaffed & locked down on weekends. Waiting (as SO many others do) for a bed at a treatment facility. Jails don’t help people - they kill people. This isn’t justice 💔

In 2022, 4.6 million Americans were banned from voting due to a felony conviction. We're committed to expanding voting rights in every state and working with state partners to provide specific data on state felony disenfranchisement. #FreeTheVote! bit.ly/3kGns8t

End Prison Gerrymandering: Lawmakers of both parties agreed: A community shouldn’t get a louder voice in state government just because it contains a prison.  thehill.com/opinion/civil-…

Join us in Harrisburg tomorrow as we rally around HB 1756 a bill that codifies and creates the processes and procedures for voting in jail!

It was great to join my colleagues & advocates in demanding the passage of Rep. Rick Krajewski's bill, HB1756 to standardize voting procedures in all county jails. In the 2020 general election, only 52 out of 25,000 eligible inmates voted.

This week we stood with our advocacy partners and friends in the State Legislature to lift up HB 1756, a measure that codifies and creates the processes and procedures for voting while in jail. This isn't radical, it is simply creating the space for jail admins to do their job.

Voting isn't a privilege, it is a human right and the de facto disenfranchisement that is occurring in PA county jails due to the lack of processes and procedures must be addressed. HB 1756 is a huge step forward!

I look forward to continuing the fight to ensure that robust voting practices are in place at every county jail in the Commonwealth. Grateful for the collaboration of the State Department, All Voting is Local, PA Leg Black Caucus, The PENNfranchise Project and more.

Individuals with a negative relationship with the criminal legal system are human beings just like you and me. The perpetual narrative that dehumanizes this population is a manifestation of systemic racism and should be categorized as such. Wrongful convictions, over policing,

I joined a panel of experts the other week at a council hearing on decarceration representing the 70,000 incarcerated people in Pennsylvania to help this committee understand the dire situation our prisons department finds itself in.
