That note you hold, narrowing and rising, shakes Like New Orleans reflected on the water, And in all ears appropriate falsehood wakes, Building for some a legendary Quarter Of balconies, flower-baskets and quadrilles, Everyone making love and going shares— Oh, play that thing!

Selflessness is like waiting in a hospital In a badly-fitting suit on a cold wet morning. Selfishness is like listening to good jazz With drinks for further orders and a huge fire. Philip Larkin #InternationalJazzDay

'The Guardian' reports new research that novelist Barbara Pym may've been a spy for MI5. There's much on her in the archive of her friend and supporter Philip Larkin. Maybe we should look through it for microfilm dots and hidden codes... tinyurl.com/4uxsftw9 PhilipLarkinSociety

This is a great blog about literature, including this week a fascinating exploration of Larkin's poem of early summer, The Trees. open.substack.com/pub/jwikeley...

I've got a new piece up on the S*bstack on Philip Larkin's "The Trees", a seriously uncanny poem disguised as a much simple one. Link below. PhilipLarkinSociety.

Today marks the birthday in 1913 of one of Larkin's favourite writers, and personal friend, novelist Barbara Pym. Pym was born in Oswestry in Shropshire, and a blue plaque dedicated to her can be found there.
